Personal History
- Native of Houston, TX
- Graduated cum laude from Austin College
- Earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physiological psychology from Tulane University
- Has held academic, administrative, or executive positions at Tulane University, Texas Christian University, Bradley University, and the University of Maine
- Married to Martha Hitt and has two children and two grandchildren
- Became the fourth president of the University of Central Florida on March 1, 1992.
Recent Awards and Achievements

- Won the 2002 James B. Green Award from the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission
- Honored with the Jewish National Fund’s 1999 Tree of Life Award
- Received United Cerebral Palsy’s 1998 Jack Holloway Star of Gratitude Award
- Recognized by the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce with its 1998 John Young Award
