John Schell earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Drew University and his MA and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University, where his dissertation “Shelley and Decorum” was supervised by Dr. W. Paul Elledge.
Having served as English Department chair and assistant dean at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Schell came to UCF in 1987 to chair the Department of English, which he did until 1997.
Schell joined the UCF Office of Academic Affairs in 2000 where he served as Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies. Since 2008, he now serves as Vice President and Executive Chief of Staff in the Office of the President.
Schell’s publications include articles on English romantic poetry and business writing; his books include The Short Handbook for Writers (McGraw Hill) and Writing on the Job: A Handbook for Business and Government (New American Library).
He has served as a writing consultant for businesses, professional and non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies. He has been a principal investigator and consultant on grant projects, and his own most recent grant award was from the U.S. Department of Education for $880,000 to continue the UCF McNair Scholars Program.
